1980 Version[]
Fame is a 1980 American musical film conceived and produced by David De Silva, directed by Alan Parker, screenplay by Christopher Gore and musical score by Michael Gore. The film follows a group of students through their studies at the New York High School of Performing Arts (which later merged with the High School of Music and Art to become the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts). The film is split into sections corresponding to auditions, freshman, sophomore, junior and senior years. The film ranked number 42 on Entertainment Weekly's 2006 list of the "50 Best High School Movies".
The film has spawned a television series and spin-off, a stage musical, a reality competition series, and a 2009 film remake.
According to the book FAB: An Intimate Life of Paul McCartney by Howard Sounes, the school portrayed in the film was a direct inspiration for the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA), of which Sir Paul McCartney is the lead patron.
2009 Version[]
Fame is a 2009 musical film and a loose remake of the 1980 film of the same title. It was directed by Kevin Tancharoen and written by Allison Burnett. It was released on September 25, 2009 in the USA, Canada, Ireland, and the UK.
